Indoor air quality is the
Environment Protection Agency’s (EPA) number one health
concern. With the energy crisis of the 1970s and with
energy costs continuing to rise, we’ve sealed up our homes
to save on heating and air conditioning costs. The problem
is we’ve also sealed the pollutants in with us. Consumers
started to become aware of this problem in 1976 when
Legionnaire’s Disease broke out at in the building where the
American Legion convention was being held in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. It was discovered that the cause was due to
poor ventilation and air quality and bacteria that was
thriving in the cooling system. The EPA now says that
indoor air quality can be up to five times worse indoors
than it is outdoors. What kind of pollutants do we live
with? Toxic odors from paints, carpet, aerosols;
formaldehyde from paints, plywood, and mobile homes; dust
and dust mites; and there are many more. Did you know that
42,000 dust mites live in one ounce of dust? And a home of
1,500 square feet creates more than 62 pounds of dust per
year and can host 15 different species of dust mites? No
wonder the number of people with allergies is increasing!
Not only do these indoor pollutants cause an increase in
allergies, they’ve also contributed to an increase in
asthma, cancer, and chronic diseases.
